Ten 2017 Releases I Really Should’ve Read Last Year

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week I will make a list of 10 books, authors or other bookish things surrounding a certain topic. Today, we’re talking about books we really wanted to read in 2017, but haven’t gotten around to. I could scream ‘I REALLY WANTED TO READ THIS’ at all of these books, to be honest. There are so many books I wanted to read in 2017. But I didn’t.

This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada // I’ve seen this on quite a few best-of lists, which is surprising because I had completely missed the hype on this one. I got an ARC of it at YALC in July, and somehow haven’t read it yet.

The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy #1) by S.A. Chakraborty // This is one I’m really kicking myself for. It sounds like the type of fantasy book I’d absolutely love with diverse aspects to it. I NEED TO READ THIS ASAP.

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao // An East Asian fantasy reimagining of The Evil Queen legend about one peasant girl’s quest to become Empress… Why haven’t I read it?

The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck // Set at the end of WWII, in a Bavarian castle. It’s the story of three widows whose lives are intertwined. Sounds incredible!

Done Dirt Cheap by Sarah Nicole Lemon // This is a book about the friendship between two girls: one is the daughter of a biker club president, the other in the services of a lawyer who wants to dismantle them. This sounds amazing, and I always want to read more books about female friendship.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas // I KNOW. I even own a copy of this book! I don’t know why I haven’t read it yet… Well, yes I do. I’ve been in a massive reading slump for 4 months now. Still, I want to read it.

Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer #1) by Laini Taylor // I actually do have a reason for not reading this. The paperback copy hasn’t been released yet. I generally prefer reading paperbacks over hardcovers (and especially prefer the price of a paperback). So I haven’t bought it yet.

Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor #1) by Mark Lawrence // I just bought this which means I no longer have an excuse and have to read this soon.

I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo // This sounds like such an adorable read, and I know I’ll probably end up loving it. So I need to buy it.

Chemistry by Weike Wang // I haven’t seen this on my blogs, but it looks like an incredible read to me? It’s about a Chinese American female scientist, who really needs to answer the question: ‘What do I really want?’

There you go, 10 books I really should’ve read last year.
I could probably make a list of 30 books I should’ve read in 2017…
Have you read any of these? Which ones should I make a priority?

  1. I hope you will read The Hate U Give and Forest of a Thousand Lanterns soon – I loved both of these books 🙂 I haven’t read Strange The Dreamer and I Believe in a Thing Called Love just yet, but both are on my TBR, they sound fantastic 🙂
    Happy reading!! 🙂

  2. The City of Brass, Strange the Dreamer and The Hate U Give I want to read as well. And I really want to buy or get The Forest of a Thousand Lanterns as well. So pretty.

  3. I’ve had the hardback copy of Strange the Dreamer since August and I still haven’t got round to it. It’s a shame, because I’m really looking forward to it 🙂

I HAVE read The Hate U Give though – I’m proud because it’s rare I get round to new releases so quickly!

  4. I freaking ADORED This Mortal Coil. Like, I want to build a shrine and worship to it every day. Not to say, I’d suggest to immediately try to read that one ;).

  5. I feel so bad about not reading The Women in the Castle yet! It sounds great, and I actually won a copy in a giveaway… and it’s still sitting there on my shelf. You have a lot of great books here — good luck getting to them!

  6. The Hate U Give, Forest of a Thousand Lanterns and Strange The Dreamer are still on my TBR as well. I did read and love I Believe in a Thing Called Love, so hope you will too 🙂

  7. THUG is definitely the one I’d recommend most! The only other one I’ve read is Strange the Dreamer, but it was actually one of my disappointments of last year. 🙈 I need to read City of Brass as well! I’m thinking of maybe listening to the audiobook, but the hold line is so long.
    Here’s my TTT: http://buecher-monster.de/2018/01/09/top-10-tuesday-ten-books-we-meant-to-read-in-2017-but-didnt-get-to-and-totallyyyy-plan-to-get-to-in-2018/ 😊

  8. The book Chemistry looks really interesting! Especially because I’m studying something in the lines of chemical engineering 😀 And the premise seems quite unique.
