Contemporary-a-thon TBR

I might participate in the contemporary-a-thon hosted by Chelsea, Julie and Natasha, which takes place from September 17th until September 23rd. Now, I will be traveling during this time, so I didn’t pick very many books. This is a very tentative TBR! I’m sure I will read something during my trip as I am traveling alone (so maybe some audiobooks will come in handy) but I don’t want to pressure myself reading-wise. I just want to enjoy my trip, and read some good books if I can.

Let’s take a look at the challenges.

1. Read a book with orange on the cover

I might bring Noteworthy with me on my trip, although I probably won’t bring more than 1 or 2 physical books. This does have 2 orange stripes on it, so I’m counting it. I also might read Crazy Rich Asians for this topic. This book has been sitting on my shelf for a while, and it’s kind of orange, right? I also have this on Kindle, which would be perfect for my trip.

2. Read a dark/taboo/spooky contemporary

eeny meeny

For this one, I might pick up Eeny Meeny, which is a thriller. I also have a Kindle copy of this book which means I won’t have to drag around a paperback book while on vacation. This sounds really interesting as it’s about a killer who locks two people up in a room with a gun. If you kill the other person, you’ll be set free.

3. Read a diverse contemporary

I have Kindle copies of Everything Comes Back to YouJust Juliet, and Carry the Ocean. Two of these books are m/m romances, and one is an f/f romance. Carry the Ocean also includes a main character with autism. So I might pick up one of these for this topic! Of course, if I decide to pick up Crazy Rich Asians for the first challenge, that could also count for this one as it centers around an entirely Asian cast of characters (I think).

4. Read a contemporary in a non-traditional format

I didn’t pick a specific book for this challenge because I’m not sure what I’m going to do just yet. I do have some Kindle copies of poetry books, so I might read one of those. Or I could listen to an audiobook while walking around and going sightseeing. I don’t want to set anything in stone here!

5. Read a contemporary with your initials on the cover

small great things

I was a bit scared of this topic, to be honest. My first name is Jolien, which gives me the initial J. My last name consists of two words, and give me the initials D and L. I was afraid I wouldn’t find anything, but I spotted a Jodi Picoult book on my Kindle! Her name includes all of my initials, so it works out perfectly. I’m hoping to pick up Small Great Things to beat this challenge.

6. Read a contemporary from a new-to-you author

I think the majority (if not all) of the books I’ve picked so far would be from new-to-me authors. I can’t remember whether I’ve read a Jodi Picoult, but I haven’t read any books by the other authors. So I will probably count one of those reads for this challenge too!

7. Read a 5-star prediction

it only happens in the movies

At this point, any Holly Bourne book is a 5-star prediction for me. I’ve loved both of the books I’ve read by her, so I assume I will love the rest too. I chose It Only Happens in the Movies for this challenge because it’s one of the Holly Bourne books I have on my Kindle already.

That’s what I’m hoping to read during the readathon!
I don’t think I will get to all of these because, like I said, I will be traveling, but it’s still nice to make a TBR and challenge myself.
Are you participating?

  1. Well I hope you can find some time to get around to reading these books. I read Crazy Rich Asians this month and it was really good! It Only Happens in the Movies is a book I really wanted to read awhile back but I don’t think I ever got around to picking it up.

  2. Oh Carry The Ocean is really really good!! I actually haven’t ever seen another blogger reading it so yay!😂The autism rep is a little on the stereotype side, but it’s pretty darn good and decent and the anxiety rep is amazing too!! I also really want to read Crazy Rich Asians with all the hype that’s been going on.😱😂And I MUST read a Holly Bourne someday!!
